“Russian Valenki” museum Valenki – is a very nice, simple, very Russian-like word.
They have been an inalienable part of the Russian suit, Russian way of living, Russian winter and even Russian character. ”As simple as valenok”, “he is acting the fool (he is felting Vania)”, “If not by washing then by rolling” – these are the sayings of our culture. And nobody needs explanations what they mean: valenki are as simple as Russian men are, but they are at the same time resistant, basic and reliable, they will not let you down in hard times! Valenki– are convenient and healing footwear. In valenki you can live through even the hardest frosts. Pure fleece felted with warm hands of a craftsman gives a person energy and peace of soul. This unique – without beginning, without end, without a seam, without a hem – footwear was respected in Rus by all ranks and strata. “Russian valenki” MUSEUM - is the only one in Moscow where you can get to know many new things about such an ordinary object and realize its importance. Various models are represented in the museum: starting with embroidered valenki of the end of the 19th century up to felt boots which Russian sportsmen – participants of the Olympiad of 2002 – had on them. Fuller - in the past that was a craftsman highly respected in Rus, and his skills have century-deep roots. Knowledge of methods and tools of manual felting, stages of industrial production of felted footwear and watching of a video-film enable to trace the route of valenki birth from a clump of fleece up to finished commodity. Many times valenki saves Russian people in hard times, and photos from the fronts of the Great Patriotic War prove that. Without valenki it would have been impossible to master northern regions, make expeditions to the North and South Poles. At present valenkiare taking back love to them on the part of citizens, and for designers and modellers they constitute a real object of creativity. The results of artists’ imagination can also be found in the museum. The mission of the museum - lies in recalling people: our ancestors could take from the nature the necessary things by their right without violating the harmony of the surrounding life. We are striving to give rebirth to and use in modern life labour experience and knowledge of the Russian people. The museum has the task of not only preserving, studying and replenishing the collection, but also carrying out enlightenment and educational activity. Teaching Slavonic traditions of labour and holiday to children takes places in the museum in different forms. I can feel fleece with my fingers, I can feel the heaviness of cast iron in my hands. Staying in decorated valenki the child perceives something Alive in the past. Participation in creative competitions arouses interest in national culture on the part of children. And doing traditional crafts gives a particular joy of creativity and union. It is warm and convenient in the museum like it is in valenki. Welcome! As one of the visitors has written in the book of comments: ”There is nothing more Russian than valenki. To preserve them means to preserve Russian culture”. |
